Ten Life Lessons We Learned From Uncle Phil

james avery

[GlobalGrind] Yesterday the world said goodbye to esteemed actor James Avery.

Though he had a lengthy career, Avery is best known for his role on hit 90s sitcom The Fresh Prince Of Bel Air. The 65-year-old played Will Smith’s rich uncle Phillip Banks. After getting in a fight in the school yard, Will is sent to live with Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv in Bel Air, a far cry from the West Philadelphia neighborhood he’s used to. The street-smart teen quickly adjusts to his new lifestyle and it’s not long before he’s running the show – or so he thought.

Each week dedicated fans tuned in to watch pure comedy gold play out in the Banks household as Uncle Phil and Aunt Viv took on raising their trouble-making nephew on top of their own three kids. They were the TV family everyone loved and wanted to be a part of. They were dysfunctional, sure, but it was clear how much love they had for one another – yes, even Will and Carlton.

The show was introduced in September 1990 and went on for six years before being cancelled in 1996.

Avery’s character was the glue that kept the Banks family together. He told it like it was, wasn’t afraid to lay down the law, and was the only one who could keep Will in line! There was always a lesson to be learned when Uncle Phil was around and – let’s face it – he was usually right.

We rounded up everything we learned from James’ character.

Check it out.
