HP Chromebook 14 Review

Chromebooks have always been known as the budget laptops all around the world and HP Chromebook 14 is just following the same trend. The HP Chromebook 14 is probably the first Chromebook that is running on an AMD processor. Not to give it all up in the introduction but the change in the processor actually does not help the Chromebook 14 to give out better performance. So, if you’re a little tight on budget or if you just want a laptop on which you can read your emails, edit basic documents and other normal day to day stuff. HP’s Chromebook 14 might just be for you. The Chromebook 14 starts at about $270. Yes, $270 and considering such a low price the Chromebook actually performs quite well and doesn’t compromise much on the design like some other Chromebooks either. Well, here’s our full review for HP’s Chromebook 14.

Design and Display

The design of the HP Chromebook 14 is okay. It’s not something really over the top but it isn’t something that will embarrass you either. Like if we consider the price of this laptop then frankly speaking the design is quite good. It’s all plastic, so nothing too fancy here. The back of the lid houses the HP logo in the center and the Chrome logo on the top left corner of the lid. The deck houses the keyboard, the speaker grill, and the trackpad. The deck also looks plenty spacious and doesn’t feel congested at all. The keyboard follows a normal layout and doesn’t have a number pad. There are many things that are good about this laptop but the keyboard is definitely not one of them. Don’t get me wrong, the keyboard isn’t bad it’s that there many other good laptops out there with better keyboards but then again looking at this laptop’s price tag makes everything forgivable. The keys aren’t much spacious, the keyboard also feels a lot mushy and the arrow keys are really small but if we look on the bright side, the key travel isn’t too shallow and the keys don’t make loud noises while typing. The trackpad is also good, it’s big enough to get most of your work done without any problems. The trackpad is smooth and precisive but can be a little inaccurate sometimes. Other than that, the trackpad supports most of the Chrome OS gestures and the clicks have a tactile feedback. The speaker grill is located on top of the keyboard, the speaker’s sound just fine.

Talking about the display, the screen is a 14 inches HD panel but there is a configuration of this laptop which is available with a Full HD display. The display is surrounded by big plastic bezels which makes the laptop look a little outdated but hey! It costs just $270. The color reproduction is, in other words, it’s just fine. The brightness is also a bit low as compared to many other laptops but that is forgivable as well.

Performance and Specifications

The Chromebook 14 comes with a dual-core AMD A4-9120 processor, 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of flash storage, Radeon R4 graphics, and an HD screen and this configuration of the Chromebook 14 should cost you about $269 but there is another variant available which comes with a Full HD 1920 x 1080 display and will cost you about $299. So, unless you’re like super tight on budget we suggest you put in those extra $30 and buy the Chromebook 14 with a Full HD display. Now coming to the Chromebook 14’s performance, the performance of the Chromebook 14 is pretty mediocre when compared to other laptops. So, it isn’t like the Chromebook 14 is slow or something like that but it’s just that on paper the processor in the Chromebook 14 performs a little slower than other laptops with Intel processors. The Chromebook 14 should get most of your day to day work done without any frame drops or lag. Overall, the laptop will give a smooth working experience but there are many other laptops available out there that have a better processor. The battery life on the Chromebook 14 is also just fine, the laptop should give you about 6 to 7 hours of working time depending upon your usage.  Verdict

The Chromebook 14 is a safe player which doesn’t take too many risks except for of course the risk of choosing an AMD processor which does show in Chromebook 14’s performance. The laptop starts at about $269 and looking at the price, the laptop is a value for money laptop. The battery is enough to get you through most of your work, the performance is also fine and the design doesn’t feel cheap and with a price tag of $269, we can’t really expect much from a laptop. However, if you’re a little flexible on the budget there are many other good laptops available in the market which can give out a good performance and have a bigger battery. For instance, take the Acer Chromebook 514 which costs around $350 but overall gives a better experience.
