2014 Oscar Nominations: Who Made The Shortlist & Who Got Snubbed?

[Celebitchy] The 2014 Oscar nominations just came out, and there are many major surprises and WTFs, just like there are every year. I’m disappointed that Idris Elba didn’t make the shortlist for Best Actor for Mandela, but I was sort of expecting it too. My biggest surprise? NO LOVE FOR EMMA THOMPSON. I realize that Saving Mr. Banks wasn’t the best film of the year or anything, but to not recognize Emma’s outstanding work is absurd. ABSURD. I’m also still surprised to see the Academy still ride-or-dying for Alexander Payne and his latest film, Nebraska, as that film garnered many nominations. I’m most pleased with all of the nominations for 12 Years a Slave: I worried that someone major would be snubbed (like Chiwetel) and I would be so disappointed, but everyone’s there. So, here are the nominations in the major categories:

Best Supporting Actress:
Lupita Nyong’o, “12 Years a Slave”
Sally Hawkins, “Blue Jasmine”
Jennifer Lawrence for “American Hustle”
June Squibb for “Nebraska”
Julia Roberts for “August: Osage County”

Best Supporting Actor:
Barkhad Abdi, “Captain Phillips”
Bradley Cooper, “American Hustle”
Michael Fassbender, “12 Years a Slave”
Jonah Hill, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Jared Leto, “Dallas Buyers Club”

Lead Actor:
Christian Bale, “American Hustle”
Bruce Dern, “Nebraska”
Leonardo DiCaprio, “The Wolf of Wall Street”
Chiwetel Ejiofor, “12 Years a Slave”
Matthew McConaughey, “Dallas Buyers Club”

Lead Actress:
Amy Adams, “American Hustle”
Cate Blanchett, “Blue Jasmine”
Sandra Bullock, “Gravity”
Meryl Streep, “August: Osage County”
Judi Dench, “Philomenia”

Best Director:
David O. Russell, “American Hustle”
Alfonso Cuaron, “Gravity”
Alexander Payne, “Nebraska”
Steve McQueen, “12 Years a Slave”
Martin Scorsese, “The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Best Picture:
“American Hustle,” ”Captain Phillips,” ”Dallas Buyers Club,” ”Gravity,” ”Her,” ”Nebraska,” ”Philomena,” ”12 Years a Slave,” ”The Wolf of Wall Street.”

Yes, the Academy loves David O. Russell. The Academy loves Christian Bale no matter what (although to be fair, Bale’s Hustle performance was perhaps the most I’ve ever liked him in a role). The Academy loves Amy Adams, which is nice. The Academy loves Judi Dench, like, A LOT. And apparently the Academy is tired of Tom Hanks. Which is kind of funny because Tom is like Meryl – he gets nominated for just showing up, but not this year. Also: no Robert Redford, which… I understand. His film got buzz, but I don’t think Redford really gives a crap. Oh, and NO JOAQUIN PHOENIX. Which is probably fine with him since he thinks awards are crap anyway. AND NO OPRAH. Oh, Oprah is going to be depressed about that. That’s kind of rough for her because she wanted it.

Also: the Academy loves Jonah Hill, which still cracks me up. Jonah Hill is our next great actor, amirite. And while I didn’t include Best Foreign Film nominees, a lot of people are talking about the exclusion of Blue Is the Warmest Color. Damn, why does the Academy hate French lesbians?!
