Sochi Olympics Open Amidst More Problems

[InsideEdition] There is more chaos at the Winter Olympics.

This time, only four of the five Olympic rings lit up at the opening ceremonies, just ten minutes after it began.

INSIDE EDITION’s Paul Boyd spoke to ABC News correspondent Matt Gutman, who’s in Sochi covering the Winter Olympics for World News with Diane Sawyer.

Gutman said, “So much has been made about these games, specifically about the granduer, the extravagance, the spectacle of the opening ceremonies. And for something like that to go wrong, I’m sure that is causing Mr. Putin to pout right now.”

Boyd asked, “Early reports suggest a very chaotic, unorganized atmosphere over there in Russia. How bad is it there from your perspective?”

“A lot of folks have been complaining that the Russians have had seven years to prepare for this,” said Gutman. “And over the past couple of days we’ve been walking around and we’ve been watching workmen hammer in the tiles to the hotels as we’re checking in!”

Gutman had his own personal encounter with the Sochi when he found a dead bee in a packet of breakfast honey.

Now, comes word that the Russians are putting surveillance cameras in the showers!

“You know that there are cameras everywhere. You know that they’re watching what you’re saying on the internet and what you’re tweeting out, but the showers and the bathrooms, that is perhaps a bridge too far.”

And while the Olympic stadium looks grand, Gutman took a photo of construction debris and filthy water just a short distance away. Other construction debris litters the hills around Sochi.

And those fears of terrorism are having a big impact on tourism.

Boyd asked, “What are the projections in terms of attendance for these Olympics? Are American tourists going to show up?”

Gutman replied, “I have to tell you Paul, we’ve been here for five days, we haven’t seen a single American on the street. Not one.”

Primetime coverage got off to a rocky start when NBC Olympics host Bob Costas could barely open his left eye. He has pinkeye!

Costas, wearing glasses, said on camera, “I have no choice but to go all Peabody and Sherman on you for the next couple of nights, since I woke up this morning with my left eye swollen shut and just about as red as the old Soviet flag.”

Some are wondering if the poor sanitary conditions in Sochi are to blame for Costas’ eye infection.

Referring to the conditions in Sochi, Gutman said, “Seven years. Fifty billion dollars! What have you been doing?”
