(CBSNewYork) — One man was killed and three others were wounded Wednesday night during a concert at Irving Plaza in Union Square.

Shots were fired at the concert venue, at 17 Irving Plaza, around 10 p.m., officials told CBS2.

The shooting happened in the third-floor green room area at the venue, Chief of Manhattan South Detectives William Aubry said at a news conference.

Hip-hop artist T.I. had been scheduled to perform that night, but two other performers – Maino and Uncle Murda – were on the stage at the time, Aubry said.

Four people were struck by gunfire in the shooting.

A 34-year-old man was shot in the chest and a 33-year-old man was shot in the abdomen, officials said.

Aubry confirmed that one of the men was pronounced dead at Mount Sinai Beth Israel Hospital.

The other was taken to Bellevue Hospital Center. His condition was earlier described as critical, but Aubry said it was unknown.

A 26-year-old woman was shot in the left leg and was also taken to Bellevue, officials said. She was expected to survive.

Another man was also shot and found his own way to NYU Langone Medical Center. That victim’s condition was not known.

As of midnight Thursday morning, no one had been arrested, Aubry said. But he said police have recovered ballistic evidence and the crime scene search continued early Thursday.

As CBS2’s Dave Carlin reported, multiple blocks were cordoned off near the scene, including a significant section of busy 14th Street just to the south.

Many people panicked as they wondered what was going on. Twitter video showed the scene inside the concert venue after shots rang out.

Concertgoers talked about the chaos.

“It was about to go on. We saw, like, two people up on the VIP arguing, and then everybody started running because they heard the shots,” one woman said. “It was terrifying. We just kept running with everybody else because they were running for their lives, so we just started running, and I fell, and I got stomped on a little bit. My shoe came off.”

“We had no idea where it was coming from, so we just were running out for the exit, you know, anywhere we possibly could,” a man added.

An ambulance was seen pulling away from the scene around 11 p.m., which may have been transporting someone injured as people scrambled for their lives, CBS2’s Carlin reported.

T.I. — who had been set to be the headline performer Wednesday night — is a major hip-hop star based in Atlanta. Back in 2006, shots were fired at another show he performed in Cincinnati. That shooting left his friend and personal assistant Philant Johnson dead.

At the time of the shooting, T.I. was in the facility but was not performing, Aubry said.

Late Wednesday night, police were interviewing potential witnesses and going through concertgoers’ cameras, Aubry said.

Aubry said Irving Plaza has a security protocol and does have metal detectors, Aubry said. He said police were still investigating how someone got a gun into the venue.
